Release the Power of Creativity! Keep Notes.
One way to release the power of creativity in your life is to keep a note book with you at all times.
Jot down ideas and inspiring words. Sketch and doodle even if you do not consider yourself an artist. Many of these ideas will not be useful, however you may find a diamond in the rough.

  1. Chris Ivey from SXSW 2012

First day at South by Southwest Music & Film conference in Austin, Texas and I have to say from the night before, the conference has a lot to live up to in regards to the spirited group of artists I've met. I am being hosted by an independent filmmaker who hosted a night with friends to show their own works and made time to truly get to know each other. I sometimes feel that this is missing at events where people come to meet in a mass group. A lot of times between the hundreds of cards being handed out, essential questions such as "How are you?" and "Things are good?" get lost in the fray as we try to network up to a higher power. I am happy to have had the joyous night before and looking forward to hopefully having many more like it.

Best for now... Chris Ivey, filmmaker, East of Liberty documentary series

  2. Great to see artist getting together. I hope to host a Creative Summit in Pittsburgh. It is a weekend where artist , writers, filmakers, poets, etc. get together with "lay people" and discuss the creative process. Did one a few years ago as part of our companies 20th Anniversary at Nemacolin Resort. I will keep you posted.

    1. The journal/sketching idea is powerful. While my own creativity is a little different than film or design, I have stacks of old journals, for quotes, for lists of letters written, and lists of books read or to be read. My wife is an artist in glass and metalsmith-ing (sic), and she writes and draws every day, like morning pages. One of the best ways to release your creativity is to subject yourself to the book/process "Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain." or was it the Left side of the brain? One of the greatest engineering inventors that I ever knew, Harold Gegenheimer, may he RIP, had a little spiral book that he carried around to jot down ideas, right next to his pocket protector. Once you write it down, you can go back and expand and elaborate.

    2. Some people may choose to use a mini tape recorder or even their Ipad to keep quick notes. These tools can be very helpful especial after a brainstorming session where you leave the session with so many ideas however later that night a great idea comes to mind. There still seems to something special to putting a pen or pencil to a notebook though.

  3. Once you have spent hours coming with ideas how do you know which ones to use? Do research... ask your target market.

  4. For some reason during this time of year. I seem to come up with more ideas? I am not sure why it could be the long periods of daylight. What is the best times for you to come up with ideas? When are you most creative? How do you plan for it?

  8. Creative people that make a living from the creative process must always have a reserve of ideas. Reading and viewing things outside of our field is very helpful. An Architect may want to study the work of a graphic designer. A Graphic designer may notice the work and trends in film making or even in product design. Talking with an electrician may bring ideas to the front of your mind that you would never think about. Explore new industries to Release the Power of Creativity.
